The Canadiens were founded in 1909 as a "charter member of the National Hockey Association" (List). The franchise joined the NHL in 1917 and was one of the original six teams which included the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Montreal developed some great rivalries with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Boston Bruins and the Quebec Nordiques. These rivalries developed through years of heated playoff series, which created bad blood between the teams. The Montreal Canadiens are often referred to as the Habs. They also have many french orginating nicknames, which include: Le Blue-Blanc-Rouge, Le Tricolore, Le CH, les Canadiens and Le Grand Club. The Montreal Canadiens are the team that has hoisted the Stanley Cup the most times with 24. The Molson Family currently owns the Montreal Canadiens. (Montreal)
This year is Montreal's 99th season in the National Hockey League and the Canadiens are currently sitting first in the league with 37 points. They play in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference and have 17 wins, 6 losses and 3 losses in overtime. Many believe that the habs have a team which is good enough to make a deep run into the playoffs. If Carey Price can stay healthy in the playoffs, the habs have a good chance of making it far. Max Pacioretty completes a long list of players that have worn the "C" for the Montreal Canadiens. Although Pacioretty had some difficulty coping with the responsibilities of a captain in his first year, he is much more comfortable in his role as a leader in his second year.
